The Construction of 36-meter Span Pedestrian Glulam Bridge in Sarawak

Summary
Structural Glued Laminated Timber (Glulam) manufactured from local timber is new to Sarawak, Malaysia but has already been widely used elsewhere. Alan Batu (Shorea albida), a tropical timber species, was used for the fabrication of a glulam with the purpose of creating public awareness of the potential utilization of glued laminated structures. This paper describes the approaches to design, preparation and testing of materials, manufacturing and fabrication of components and erection for a 36-meter span glulam bridge. The construction of a glulam bridge from tropical timber was proven techinically feasible. The erection of the bridge was successfully completed 19th March 1998 and monitoring of the bridgeユs durability is in progress.
